Three Quick Tips to Clean Your Grill for Summer

It’s Summertime!

Warm weather has arrived, and in many regions, it already feels like summer. If you enjoy to barbecue and host parties at your home, you are probably already thinking about your grill. Maybe you’ve already brought it out of the garage and completed some test runs. Before you have that big Memorial Day BBQ you should make sure the grill is properly cleaned so that you don’t have an embarrassing grease fire or foul tasting meats.

At The Cozy Flame, we love to sell our favorite products. The Big Green Egg and MHP Grills rival others on the market by leaps and bounds. Besides having the best product around, you need to understand how to keep this product in its’ prime condition.  You also have to properly maintain your products to get the best use out of them.

Grill Tips

  1. Clean it from the grates to the ground. You should be sure to clean it properly for the type of fuel it burns. Charcoal grills will have more residue to remove and often have more grates to clean. The peeling residue at the bottom of your charcoal grill is not peeling paint. It’s carbonized grease, and it needs to be scraped and brushed away. Once you have cleaned the inside of the grill, rub the grate down with olive oil, and then clean the exterior of debris, dust, and grease.

Required Tools: stainless steel grill brush, rubber gloves, paint scraper, soap, water, bucket, cloth

  2. Cover the heating elements with aluminum foil (gas grills). Before you begin cleaning, use aluminum foil to tightly cover the heat elements. When you’re finished with the scrubbing and cleaning, you can remove this aluminum foil and discard it. All of the debris that falls onto the elements will be contained.

Extra Tip: Using aluminum foil while grilling helps reduce the amount of residue left behind on the grill.

  3. Fire it up.Once the cleaning is complete, turn on your gas grill, or light your charcoal grill and let it burn for an hour to simulate the amount of time you would grill a small meal. This tests the grill to ensure it’s safe before you use it with guests and family nearby. It also will burn off any residue left behind by your cleaning solution. A natural cleaner that works well and isn’t toxic however, is vinegar.

Extra Tip: Place a thin layer of vinegar on a cookie sheet, stainless steel pan, or aluminum foil on the grate and cook on high heat with grill closed to help remove stubborn residue.

Come To Us!

Remember, even if you purchased the best grill on the market, it won’t continue to work for you if it’s not properly maintained. The best way to maintain it is to clean it before you start grilling for the summer, and again before storing it for winter. When you clean it you can check your gas grill for safety (fuel connections, valves, and burners), and check hinges and fasteners on your charcoal grill.

It’s our goal at The Cozy Flame that all of our customers get the best products and service as well as the best experience possible. For questions regarding cleaning, operating, repairing your grill, and more, call one of our experts today!

End Summer With Grilling On A Big Green Egg!

End Summer With Grilling On A Big Green Egg Image - Mildford CT - The Cozy FlameWith Labor Day just around the corner, summer is beginning to draw to a close. Just because the weather cools off, however, doesn’t mean your cooking has to! End summer with a bang – and keep the party going all year long – with grilling on a Big Green Egg!

Make your best ever barbecue!

While most people know of the Big Green Egg as a grill it can do so much more than just sear burgers and steaks. In fact, it can be used as a smoker – with no additional attachments needed. This flexibility in cooking styles can help you make your best ever barbecue this summer!

If you’re looking for fall off the bone, flavorful to the last bite barbecue, The Cozy Flame can help you create it using a Big Green Egg as a smoker! Simply adding the smoking wood chips of your choice into your charcoal can give your barbecue restaurant quality smokiness.

Using the Big Green Egg as a smoker

To use your Big Green Egg as a smoker, all that is needed is charcoal and hardwood chips. Begin by mixing a full load of five pounds of natural lump charcoal with the smoking wood chips of your choice; hickory, apple, cherry, pecan, and more can all create their own unique flavor for your slow smoked meats. Next, set the Egg’s temperature controls to between 200 and 250 degrees. Light the charcoal mixture and leave the lid open for 10 minutes for the charcoal to fully ignite. After this, close the lid and wait for your Big Green Egg to reach optimal smoking temperatures.

Smoking times in the Big Green Egg

Unlike other smokers which need constant attention to stay at the right temperature, the temperature controls of the Big Green Egg allow you to effortless create restaurant-quality smoked meats at home. If you’re planning on smoking, be sure to allow plenty of cook time. While smoking in the Big Green Egg creates the world’s most flavorful barbecue, this “low and slow” style of cooking can take several hours – or longer – depending on the cut and size of the meat being smoked.

The following time and temperature guide can help you determine how long to smoke your meats. However, internal temperatures should be checked using a meat thermometer to ensure all foods are safely cooked.

  • Brisket: 12-20 hours
  • Back ribs: 4-5 hours
  • Short ribs: 6-8 hours
  • Meatloaf: 3 hours
  • Tri-tip: 2 hours
  • Pork butt: 14 hours
  • Whole chicken: 3-4 hours

Depending on the type of food you are smoking, the convEGGtor ceramic plate may be helpful in creating a stable cooking surface. Fitting directly into the bottom section of the Egg, this accessory is also helpful in reducing flare ups when cooking delicate foods such as fish or even when making pizza!

Don’t stop grilling as summer draws to a close. Instead, cook delicious meals all year long with your very own Big Green Egg. Big Green Recipes for this Summer

Summer is the perfect time for backyard cookouts with family and friends. For Big Green Egg owners, the possibilities are endless when it comes to the different dishes you can make! The following are just three of our favorite recipes that these versatile cooking appliances can help you create.

Cedar Planked SalmonGrilling With The Big Green Egg - Milford CT - The Cozy Flame

Cooking with grilling planks can add another dimension of flavor to your meats and mains. Likewise, cooking delicate fish like salmon on the cedar planks can prevent the fish from flaking and sticking to – or falling into – the grill.

To cook cedar planked salmon on your Big Green Egg, set the Egg for direct cooking at 400°F. Cover the salmon filets in your favorite glaze or marinade and place on the preheated planks. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes depending on the size of your salmon filets for a perfect medium.

Grilled Mini Pizzas

Kids of all ages will delight in making their own mini pizzas. Not only do mini pizzas let everyone pick their own toppings, but they also can cook much faster, even when on the grill; this gets dinner onto the table faster and easier than ever before.

Sandwich rounds make the perfect pizza crust for this recipe. Begin by setting the Egg for indirect cooking at 425°F. Next, place the sandwich rounds cut side downonto a cookie sheet and bake until lightly toasted, about five minutes. Remove and turn over; let everyone add their own sauce and toppings to create totally custom grilled pizzas. Cook pizzas for an additional five to seven minutes or until the cheese is thoroughly melted.

Smoked Apples

The Big Green Egg does more than just cook your main courses; it can also help you create delicious and sweet desserts! These smoked apples are the perfect sweet treat for your next cookout; even the most dedicated meat eater won’t be able to resist their sweet and smoky taste.

Set the Egg for indirect cooking at 300°F. Using a melon baller, remove the core of the apple while still leaving the sides and bottom intact; this allows the apple to be stuffed with a variety of fillings. Currants, marshmallows, cinnamon sticks, and even Snickers bars can all be stuffed into the apples before baking. Smoke the apples for 1-1 ½ hours until the sides are soft but not collapsing. To make dessert even sweeter, serve with a side of vanilla ice cream.

When it comes to outdoor cooking, the only limit to your Big Green Egg is your imagination! With unmatched flexibility and temperature control, you can create a wide variety of dishes that the whole family will be sure to love. Big Green Egg store - Milford CT - The Cozy FlameOne grill for all your outdoor cooking needs

When it comes to grills and outdoor cookers, there are plenty of name brands on the market. However, none can compare with the features, versatility, and durability of Big Green Egg. Based on the design of the Japanese kamado, Big Green Egg can be used in three different ways; whether you’re grilling, smoking, or baking, the only limit to what you can cook is your imagination!

There is a reason these grills are known as “The ultimate cooking experience!” Below are just a few of the capabilities of the Big Green Egg.

  • Grilling: The primary purpose of most outdoor cookers is grilling; however, Big Green Egg offers a completely unique grilling experience! With the ability to precisely control heat – as well as the capability to reach temperatures as high as 750º F – steaks, vegetables, seafood, and more will all be perfectly seared.
  • Smoking: Big Green Egg can reduce how many outdoor cooking appliances you need by also functioning as a smoker. Briskets and ribs can be cooked “low and slow” for up to 18 hours at temperatures between 200 and 350°F.
  • Oven: If you prefer sweet over savory, Big Green Egg can also be used as an oven – without any additional expensive accessories. Pies and cobblers – as well as savory dishes such as pizzas and casseroles – can be baked just as they would in a traditional oven thanks to the precise temperature control.

The right grill for every family

While Big Green Egg grills offer “one stop cooking,” they are not one size fits all. There are several different sizes and styles of grill available, allowing families to find the right outdoor cooker for their family. With sizes ranging from Mini to Extra Extra Large, there is a Big Green Egg for every group!

In addition to finding the right size grill, the right accessories can help tailor your grilling experience to your family’s unique needs. Tables and islands can create a dedicated grilling area on your deck or patio, while EGGcessories such as pizza stones, poultry rotators, and even wireless thermometers can expand how and what you cook in your Big Green Egg.

Before you even start this project, there are a few things you should consider, according to the barbecue expert, Derrick Riches, from Barbecues and Grilling at about.com:

Placement

Be sure to place your kitchen away from any structures that it could put in danger of catching fire, and where it could stay for many years to come.

Appearance

You will want to consider the design of your home as well as your yard when planning the design of your customized kitchen because you do not want it to look out of place and not fit in with its surroundings.

Utility

A well-designed outdoor cooking area should do more than just cook food. Think of this area as your outdoor kitchen, and plan on using the storage and table spaces all year round.

Weather

Consider the weather in your region, and have your kitchen built to withstand the elements there. A good enclosure is a must, if you want it to last.

Maintenance

When planning the design, make sure your outdoor kitchen is easy to clean and repair. You do not want to find out a year later that you will have to cut through bricks or stones to get to a part to replace.

Once you have considered all of these things, it is time to focus on choosing a grill. The Cozy Flame is proud to sell Wilmington grills, and whether you prefer charcoal or gas, we have a gorgeous stainless steel grill for you. Also in stainless steel, the drop-in patio grill is an excellent choice for those who want the complete outdoor kitchen experience, as it has many accessory options and add-ons.
